Is it just me?

Have you noticed the sneaky, casually mean spirited attitudes inundating our TV and social programming? It's everywhere, even in commercials. Take for example, the new gelato commercial from that well known ice cream brand: in this commercial, two adults are eating gelato in a darkened kitchen when their young son enters and turns on the light; this child’s parents lie to him… they deny him even a taste of this new treat so they can keep it selfishly and greedily to themselves. Then, there’s that popular brand “N” breakfast biscuit that has a series of commercials and ads making this glorified cookie some kind of reward for mean spirited and/or downright dishonest behavior.

Are they saying that it’s okay to be selfish, mean and greedy? Do we want our children to learn from these examples? Perhaps the message is that other people don’t matter in the face of our own desires or convenience. I find these cringe-inducing commercials anti-social especially when my young son is watching with me. I exercise my power to choose when I pick up the remote and switch to the Weather Channel or the cable-access bulletin board channel, or close a webpage.

I believe the commercial examples are only a symptom of a deeper issue. Our news has become entertainment. Scandal and poor life choices, salacious stupidity and mean spirited condescension have become the mainstays of entertainment. Media and entertainment groups seem to operate on the premise that we, the viewers, want to see only the basest of Human experiences. As viewers we obviously haven’t done enough to discourage such brain-rot. When someone voices anything less than full support and enjoyment of the brain-rot, they can expect to be attacked at every turn by vociferous, brain-rotted fans. I fully expect such attacks on this very blog post.

It seems this mean spiritedness is everywhere. Maybe it’s because of Reality TV. Maybe Reality TV is just another symptom. It certainly seems that genre is all about rewarding mean spiritedness. The winners of that island/wilderness show are never the nicest, most supportive contestants. And, does anyone remember when the Discovery Channel used to be about real science? I quit watching that channel because all I could ever find on it was some kind of reality show — like the purported custom motorcycle building show; it was more about the dysfunctional, often abusive relationship between the motorcycle artists (yes, I fully recognize the magnificent artistry of the bikes they produce). I don’t care about motorcycles; but, I would probably have watched the show occasionally to see the how’s of custom bike design (the same reasons we like shows about how everyday things are made, and the show that debunks or confirms myths and legends in popular culture).

Maybe it’s the politics of the day. From around the world, we certainly don’t lack examples of political corruption and infighting. Political contention is the order of the day. Long ago, in a time now apocryphal, we had statesmen who became leaders to serve the public need. Now… (pause to shudder) we have POLITICIANS.

If you gage Humanity by the politics and media and entertainment and advertising industries, we are a base, corrupt species. If extraterrestrial aliens did come to this world, I think they might decide we are an irredeemable race based on our entertainments and news. Who knows, maybe they’ve already been here and left. Maybe Roswell was the aliens bugging out.

Yet, uplifting entertainments and news of hope is something I have to believe most people want to see. We’ve seen multiple examples even on the big screen very recently. There’s a reason that the Bible is still the best selling, most distributed book in the world. There’s a reason we all love a happy ending and want to see the downtrodden win the day.

So… Why are our media and entertainment and advertising companies pushing this socially and morally bankrupt vision? Why aren’t we using our power of choice to demand better programming? Why aren’t we educating ourselves to use our vote to elect statesmen? Why are we letting this tiny segment of the population tell us all that we want to revel in their mean spiritedness?

Painted Pictures Hung Upon the Wall

A Poem inspired by a trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art
Pictures from the NCMA (http://ncartmuseum.org) website

Painted pictures hung upon the wall…
Frozen moments stilled upon the canvas…
Rendered so to hold us enthralled.
From a long ago fading past,
Cracking pigments of depth and richness…
In each ephemeral face a story unfolds
From eyes that follow you where ‘ere you pass…
Eyes look back… looking into the soul…
From painted pictures hung upon the wall.
Like doorways rendered to another place and time…
Do their stories play out when we’re not looking
At painted pictures hung upon the wall?

Poem: "Monsters"

Original Pen & Ink drawing/painting, by D. Denise Dianaty

Monsters, monsters everywhere…
Mother monster too wounded to care…
Monster peers so vile…
Kindred monsters, secrets keeping…

Hounding, pounding, clutching, tearing…
Monster peers catching you out of sight…
Ripping cloth, clutching you and dragging…
To hateful, vile purpose.

Kindred monsters, can’t be trusted…
Touching, whispering loathsome words…
Hidden moments, scarring the soul…
Keep the secret or worse will come.

Belts swing, bruises rise black and purple…
Cutting deep, whipping, lashing switches…
Monster Mother played out her rage…
Her wounded soul striped ‘pon her babes.

I wasn’t becoming the monster I hated…
I was falling… falling… falling…
Down a black, endless chasm…
Toward complete self obliteration.

Until a new friend, sister of my heart…
Walked me out of the darkness…
Picked me up, egged me on…
Wouldn’t let me stop ’til we embraced the light!

Dedicated to Diane, the best Christian example I could have known. The Lord used her to draw me back to Him. In His infinite Grace, He made her the sister of my heart. Through Him, she led me out of pain and darkness, and wouldn't let me stop, refused to leave me behind. Because of her, I became the person my husband grew to love… the person who learned to be loved.

Poem: "Embrace the Joy!"

Sigh… The sun comes up again
And, I wake to aching pain
Yet, surely in each new day,
You will always hear me say,
“Embrace the Joy!”

Life always beats us down and down,
’Til we think we just might drown.
But I woke today and in I breathed
My love about me is wreathed
Embrace the Joy!

The morning starts with a  hustle
all hurrying, scurrying bustle
My child’s homework to be finished
His smile ever undiminished
Embrace the Joy!

Jumbled beds we have to make
Childish rants we have to take
That first morning cup is waiting
My vat-o-coffee I’m anticipating
Embrace the Joy!

Have a cozy chat in the car
on a drive to school… not far
Sitting in carpool’s a frustration
But better than the bus station
Embrace the Joy!

No music on the ride home
Nothing but yammering DJs’ drone
It’s damp and drear outside
It’s peaceful and warm inside
Embrace the Joy!

Peace and quiet… just me-n-the dog
Space to write… for a mental jog
Cruise the Net for inspiration
Catch up with family across the nation
Embrace the Joy!

Pick up my boy from school
After sittin’ forever in carpool
To see his smiling, happy face
Charging the car in his rushed pace
Embrace the Joy!

Healthy dinner to make and serve
Hubby’s home to throw a curve
“What is that for supper?
“Can’t you fry it up in butter?”
Embrace the Joy!

The dishes are all done,
The day’s battles are won
It’s time to relax in hubby’s arms
And watch Disney’s insipid charms
Embrace the Joy!

The day is done… I rest my head
My lover and I lay upon our bed
Reveling in the smell of him
Close my eyes… ’til the morn again
Embrace the Joy!

Unashamedly Christian

The world is a hard, glaring place. It's easy to look about and see only the tragedy… the despair…the black, ugly horror of humanity. Good news is seldom newsworthy. Our 24/7 news cycle world has the horror on half-hour repeat. War and retribution on constant repeat have become our "bread and circuses."

It would be so easy to join the raucous chorus sounding the dogmatic call to ever more horrific heights of horror in answer of horror. Where will it ever end? I must, in honesty, admit, that, on occasion, I give in to that impulse. I read about or see a new travesty and think the terrible thoughts we're always being told to think. But, that's not what my Faith teaches me. That's not what my study and understanding of Christ's message teaches me. As Christians, aren't we supposed to be the Voice of Peace?

I try to begin each day remembering: His Grace was gifted to me from His Mercy and Love and through no effort nor deed of my own. Having received such a Holy and perfect Gift, who am I to forget or deny that the very same grace, mercy and love is gifted to all souls everywhere.

I hope each day that I am a living example of His Grace and a true disciple of Christ, and that my choices remain founded in the Scriptures. More than that, I hope that I do not become so dogged in discipleship that I, like the Pharisees and Sadducees, lose sight of the intent of Christ's message and gift. I try to be a living reflection of the image of God, who is love.

The lessons I try always to carry with me are from scriptures such as the following:

NIV I Corinthians 13:1 "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

NIV John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

NIV Romans 12:17 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil."

I will do all I can to impart my understanding to my son and honestly and earnestly share my Faith with those who are open to hearing it. I don't claim to always uphold these goals. I am, after all, only one all too fallible human. I do and will continue to try. I will continue to be unashamedly Christian.

Poem: What is Heaven?

What is Heaven to you?

Everyone is on their way somewhere
On the road of an orchestrated life
We all know Death is inevitable
But Death is not our destiny
Our destiny is to be held by the Divine
He knows every detail of our life
Though He sees us often stumble
He will never fail to take our hand
In us, there need be no shame

In His Mercy is Divine and matchless Grace

With the living breath of God inside us
Carrying us always forward to meet Jesus
And together walk those streets of gold
I may not know what Heaven will be
It may be beyond my wildest imaginings
But I know, as I walk and breathe in Faith
Heaven will always and forever be
Matchless and encompassing
Forever and in all infinity

The encompassing embrace of God

"I AM the Journey"

"My journey defines me; but I AM the journey. Be your own journey"

Every choice is a gateway…
a gateway to a new Me.
Sometimes, the gate opens
on a dark and haunted wood
Where I have to fight…
fight my way back to the light.

I choose to fight…
to run towards that shining path.
I choose to run…
and to leave the shadows behind.
And in the choosing…
I become the journey.

The journey defines me
and rewards me with inspiration.
I choose where I will go
and who will travel upon my paths.
I pass through that gateway and
The new Me defines the journey.

Be your own journey…

Poem: Inspiration

Lollipops and raindrops
Sunflowers and sun-kissed daisies
Rolling surf and raging sea
Sailing ships and submarines

Old Glory and “purple mountain’s majesty”
Screaming guitar and lilting rhyme
Flight of fancy and high-steppin’ dances
Set free my mind to wander…

Imagine the ant’s marching journeys.
Fly, in my mind’s eye, on butterfly wings.
Roam the distant depths of space.
Unfurl tall sails and cross the ocean.

Pictures made just to enthrall
Creating images from my truth
Painting hopes and dreams on my canvas
Capturing, through my lens, the ephemeral

Let me ruminate ‘pon sensual darkness…
Tremble o’er Hollywood’s fluttering Gothics…
Ride the edge of my seat with the hero…
Weep with the heroine’s desperation.

Yet… more than all these things…

Give me words spun out masterfully…
Terms set out in meter and rhyme…
Phrases bent to rattle the soul…
Prose that always miraculously inspires me!

The trill runs up my spine, as I recall…
A touch… a caress… a whispered kiss…
Ebony eyes embracing my soul…
Two souls united in beat of hearts.

A butterfly flutter in my womb
My lover’s wonder o’er my swelling
The testament of our love given life
Newly laid in my lover’s arms

Luminous, sweet ebony eyes
Just so much like his father’s
A gaze of wonder and contentment
From my babe at mother’s breast

Words of the Divine set down for me
Faith, Hope, Love, and Charity
Grace, Mercy, and undeserved Salvation
“My Shepherd will supply my need”

These are the things that inspire me.
