Why Do I Question?

Cappella della famiglia Gregorini Bingham

Humans are curious… We question, always seeking answers, ever finding more questions. Curiosity is integral to our human existence – to question is to breathe.

Questions and questions and questions
Changing moments, days, and years
Human existence is change…
But to ever what purpose?
Ahhh… the questions, always seeking
Seeking the answers, finding questions

What is my purpose?
What should be my plan?
Where shall I go?
Who can help me understand?
Why do I ask the questions?
Why do they plague my mind?

Every question is an offered path.
Each answer is the road taken.
As the chrysalis holds the secret
Of the worm’s metamorphosis,
So every riddle spoken holds
The answer to my queries.

While I breathe, I think… I ponder,
Forming catechisms of every aspect
of this life… then and now and when…
Living, growing, always in this
Always never ending inquisition…
This interrogatory examination of Life.

Questions and questions and questions…
Changing moments, days, and years…
Human existence is change…
Evolution is Life.
But…
Changes brings questions.
When I have no more questions,
I know, it only will ever be because
I no longer have breath to ask them.

Ruminating On Compassion

It often seems these days that compassion has become a purely tribal thing. If you don’t look or think like the tribe, you are somehow substandard… less than human and undeserving of basic human compassion. Withholding compassion is the expression of prejudice. This poem questions what motivates compassion in us and, I hope, challenges us to expand our sense of our own tribe to include all of humanity. We are, when all is said and done, only one world for one human race.

What is compassion?
What is this illusive ideal?
Is it only for the deserving?
If it’s limited is it even real?

Why do humans feel compassion, and for whom?
Is compassion reserved only for our own tribe?

What determines withholding compassion?
Who decides only the deserving may be served?
Deciding, who condescends to choose?
Who chooses for whom compassion is deserved?

Will I be chosen?
Will you?

Poem: “the new god… Technology”

A poem about our growing disconnectedness in our virtual world of social media and technology…

It seems we're becoming a world
isolated from meaningful touch.
I remember writing reams of pages
on oh so delicately scented,
tastefully detailed stationary…
There was a texture and
a weight to the pages, to the words
that seem lost now on a screen.

Making the trip to the mailbox
to turn up that little red flag,
there for everyone to see…
Telling the world I’m here…
Letting the postman know
that there was a letter…
An important correspondence
by him to be delivered

When he’d gone… pay attention!
The flag had been put down!
I remember receiving letters…
Pages in which life was poured out,
penned to share a connection…
Feeling so grown-up, so special…
Important enough for someone
to have taken that time for me.

I miss that… don’t you?
I miss the sending and receiving.
Something has been lost…
Something important… tangible…
Something indefinably precious
has been sacrificed
on the alter of a new god…
Of the god… Technology.

"The Second Commandment (according to the Jewish tradition), “You shall have no other gods before me,” does not simply refer to stone idols of Moses’ day. “Other gods” are anything that we “worship” more than God—money, power, love, education, a nation, or art.” ~excerpt from Crosswalk “10 Facts You Didn’t Know About the Ten Commandments”
