Dread Death Come

A #TwistedNurseryRhyme mimicking “Are You Sleeping”

Secrets keeping
Dread is creeping
Hope is gone
Death has come
Hear our dirges singing
Mourning bells are ringing
Ding dong dead, dread Death come

Darkness streaming,
no more dreaming
Hope is gone
Death has come
Death knell is a-ringing
Mourning bells are ringing
Ding dong dead, dread Death come

Breath of a Sigh

We are our own angels…
if we only remember we can fly.
A true partner in love…
is the wind lifting us back to the sky--
To be our wings for us…
when our own strength cannot lift us high.
Alone we may falter.
Together we soar on the breath of a sigh

Curse of the Bark

Graphic created by D. Denise Dianaty
He startled her with a roguish pinch
Ignored her feral smile and angry squint
In a fine-china cup she served him tea
Made from the bark of the wolf-willow tree
Too late he learned in the moon high dark
The gypsy curse of the bark in the bark

Bumble Bee

A short poem musing upon the humble bumbled bee

Bumble, bumble little bee,
How you fly is beyond me
Buzz-a-wuzza, buzz-a-bee
That whizzy buzz is music to me.

Acrostic poem: My Forever Valentine

My Forever Valentine

My forever Valentine
You will always be in my heart

Fidelity and loyalty are my pledge
One heart of love laid bare for you
Reverently made an altar to Love
Endowed with sanctity by your devotion
Veracity writ in your every glance
Enduring loyalty and sustaining love
Reverently offered in your gentle touch

Valentine’s Day and every day
Are ours ever and forevermore
Love plucked down from the stars
Entwining our two hearts in one
Nestling here in our embrace
Testifying God’s great gift to us
In gentle, softly whispered kisses
Nature blessed our noble hearts to
Encircle our souls united across all time

Words

A poem about the power of words giving birth to poetry. Words matter. They have the power to tear down, to destroy; words can cut deeply. But, words also have the power to heal, to create, to uplift; words can be a beacon to a better future.

The beauty in words…
Even through darkness…
Dark words seek… find light…
To carry light out of darkness.

Words to hurt
Words to heal
Words destroy
Words create

In the space between…
In the mind’s eye…
Wrenched from the void…
Forming reality of words…

Words to hurt
Words to heal
Words destroy
Words create

On flight of words…
On the precarious summit…
On the razor’s edge…
That’s where poetry is born.

Shadowed Forests of the Past

A poem of a place I left behind when “Hope was born anew…”

Bad old, dark places…
Places where my life no longer dwells…
Looking back upon the past…
That wasting, dark, drear past…
Come words from a long ago
Where my soul no longer cowers.

A place of wrenching loneliness
always on the edge of light,
waiting to drag me back…
back into it's embrace….
I just kept trying to hold on,
trying to hold out for love;

But, every day that passed without it,
Loneliness lurked to overwhelm.
And, darker still, monsters lurked…
Monsters lurked at every… every turn…
Soul shattering dramas spun out
in relentless perversions of hope.

Until that pivotal moment…
that time when change began…
Change began and Hope was born…
Hope born anew within my breast.
In that Hope, on angel’s breath…
An angel-friend led me forward.

She led me through the dark
and back to light and Faith.
I learned the true Me…
the truest Me I was meant to be
And learning Me, I learned Love.
Learning Love, I learned to love.

It's a truly blessed state…
In brilliant shining sunlight…
A place of laughter and love and joy…
Such have I found for myself…
After the long, dark road through tortured,
shadowed forests of the past.

Joseph’s Angel

Daughter, sister, wife, mother… friend
She gave loyalty for loyalty to the end
Her flame-kissed hair shinin’ like a halo
That gently teasing turn of her lips, just so
Losing Dawny cuts deep to our hearts
A little piece o’sunshine torn from hearts

With her bright laughing eyes
And those one of a kind Dawn smiles
O Lord, we all need Joseph’s Angel
Givin’ us reason to laugh in the middle o’hell

Joseph’s Angel, mom to the fiercest degree
Gone from us now with the Lord to be
Laughing eyes dimmed in pain never more
Gone home, sharin’ stories on the golden shore
Lookin’ down on her Joe with hopeful sighs
In our Lord’s bosom Our Dawny now lies

With her bright laughing eyes
And those one of a kind Dawn smiles
O Lord, we all need Joseph’s Angel
Givin’ us reason to laugh in the middle o’hell

We see her now with little tricksy pranks
Laughter for all in Heaven’s ranks
We’ll miss Joseph’s Angel while we rejoice
God called her forth with His wise choice
To with the Heavenly Hosts her stories regale
Dawny’s gone Home, made new, hearty and hale

With her bright laughing eyes
And those one of a kind Dawn smiles
O Lord, we all need Joseph’s Angel
Givin’ us reason to laugh in the middle o’hell

I never imagined such a world or day
Where she wasn’t just a phone call away
Joseph’s Angel always found the laughter
In every situation of the joke she was master
She told our stories, rendered humorously
Showed us not to take ourselves so seriously

With her bright laughing eyes
And those one of kind Dawn smiles
O Lord, we all need Joseph’s Angel
Givin’ us reason to laugh in the middle o’Hell

RIP Dawn Dell Dever Connell – my sister and my friend. [11 July 1967–30 November 2016]
I never imagined a world where our Dawny wasn’t just a phone call away. When you went Home, Dawny, a little bit of sunshine went out of the world. I don’t weep for our Dawny. There’s no more pain and suffering for her. She’s gone Home to the Lord’s embrace – for that, I will celebrate. However, for now… and for a long time to come… I weep. I weep for Joseph and Wayne. I weep for our parents and sisters. I weep for myself. I weep for a world without our Dawny… without Joseph’s Angel to make us laugh.

Ruminating On Compassion

It often seems these days that compassion has become a purely tribal thing. If you don’t look or think like the tribe, you are somehow substandard… less than human and undeserving of basic human compassion. Withholding compassion is the expression of prejudice. This poem questions what motivates compassion in us and, I hope, challenges us to expand our sense of our own tribe to include all of humanity. We are, when all is said and done, only one world for one human race.

What is compassion?
What is this illusive ideal?
Is it only for the deserving?
If it’s limited is it even real?

Why do humans feel compassion, and for whom?
Is compassion reserved only for our own tribe?

What determines withholding compassion?
Who decides only the deserving may be served?
Deciding, who condescends to choose?
Who chooses for whom compassion is deserved?

Will I be chosen?
Will you?

Poem: “To the Me That Was…”

A commentary in poetical form to myself at the age of thirteen, when things were at their worst and despair seemed to be the only future ahead…

You there… yes… you
You’re the me that was.
I’m the me who’ll be you.
A chance to end is lost.

No love behind her gate…
Another year has gone.
Just lost… lost in her hate…
Beaten down… down… down… done.

I know you wanna die.
Think you’ll end all the lies.
Again secreted the tools… sigh
The means of your demise…

Starving yourself to perfect
some ideal upon you shamed,
with no one near to protect
from her vision on you profaned.

Another Summer’s on the horizon
At hand now’s a short reprieve
Don’t despair… she never won
Off to Gran’s where love you’ll receive

These Summers are your respite
from the unremitting torment.
In those halcyon days will joy flit,
until home again you must be sent.

You’ll survive her madness
and leave her insanity behind.
Life will shine for you, I promise,
Coming to you, a heart and eyes so kind.

I swear to you, by all Heaven,
More love and joy will come
Than all the suffering she’ll leaven.
For each dark day, a hundred in the sun…

Love and joy so much better
Than you can imagine of a lover
Pressed down, shaken together…
I pledge… yes, and running over…

Whispered kisses and a healing space…
A lover strong and kind and bright…
A gentle heart of endless grace…
Ebony eyes will shine with Love’s light…

They will shine only for you
and for the person you will become in me.

Poem: "Thump-Thump…Thump-Thump…"

An erotic inner cadence as we grow through love

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Drum beat of sorrow

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Rapine devouring of tomorrow

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Heaving sighs of heartache

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Overflowing heartbreak

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Beating heart enflamed

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Waiting to be tamed

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
You gaze into my eyes

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
And make my heart rise

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
That look… my mouth stutters

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Your gaze… my heart flutters

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
The curling of my toes

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
A kiss in passion’s throes

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Your scent… so strong and warm

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
My every sense you swarm

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Bodies tangle… rush and fumble

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Hearts and limbs together tumble

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Sated, lying face to face

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Held tight in your embrace

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Your embrace is my safe harbor

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
My world’s become your ardor

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
On this path which we’ve begun

Thump-thump… thump-thump…
Our hearts now beat as one
